F: Marcus Adams Jr. (SO)

Height/Weight: 6’8”/195 lbs.

Previous School: Cal State Northridge

2024-25 Stats: 16.1 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 1.5 APG, 1.0 SPG, 52.6% FG, 39.5% 3pt

Offensive Impact

  • Adams projects as a floor spacing 4 man and potential second or third creator for this Sun Devils’ offense. Can play the 3 position in spurts.

  • He is most comfortable in a spot up role. 93rd percentile in spot up efficiency.

    • His catch and shoot ability (91st percentile) to go along with his ability to attack closeouts to either score at the rim or get to his dribble pull up make Adams a well above average player in this area of the game.

    • Quick shot release at 6’8” makes his shot difficult to cover. Has the ability to shoot on the move as well, solid body control in the air.

  • Can create his own perimeter shot at times, but his dribble creation isn’t something I trust to translate to the Big 12. 59th percentile in dribble jumper efficiency on decent volume, but his ball handler skills aren’t elite by any means and may struggle against better athletes.

    • Step back jumper is tough to guard and is efficient in the mid-range. 45.2% FG in the mid-range last season.

  • Lower volume, but Adams scores efficiently at the rim (84th percentile in rim efficiency).

    • Can score vs smaller defenders with his wider frame and has above average foot work/creativity for his size.

      • Will post up smaller defenders at times.

      • Likes his spin move when attacking the paint.

    • May see an efficiency dip with higher volume due to his lack of athleticism or above the rim ability, but this isn’t a trait to be all that concerned with. Adams has true 3-level scoring ability.

  • Not great on the glass (5.9% OREB rate) and isn’t much of a creator for others (9.9% assist rate), so we can consider Adams to be a scoring minded forward.

  • If Adams’ offensive responsibility isn’t too high, he projects as an above average connector for a Big 12 offense. His ability to operate in secondary actions should open up the floor for other ASU transfers like Moe Odum, Vasean Allette, and Adante’ Holiman to make plays on the ball.

    • There’s potential for Adams to be the 2nd option on this offense, which would change my outlook on his impact a bit, but the ability to play multiple roles within this Sun Devils’ offense should be viewed as more of a positive rather than a negative.

Defensive Impact

  • Played in a unique rim denial scheme at CSUN. Often played the 5 position.

    • Probably will not see any time at the 5 at ASU and will be playing in a completely different scheme, so he is sort of difficult to evaluate.

  • A 13.1% DREB rate for how often he played the 5 isn’t very encouraging, but CSUN’s scheme forced Adams to be in scramble mode which often takes you out of rebounding position, so this could be part of the reason why.

  • Below average lateral mover for his projected 3 or 4 position. Was switched onto smaller guards often last season and struggled to stay in front.

    • Lacks the recovery skills to be a poor lateral mover, so we can consider Adams to be a negative impact when guarding the ball.

  • Doesn’t provide much rim protection either (1.5% block rate). Can hold his own as a post up defender but isn’t anything above average as an interior defender.
