G: Tayton Conerway (SR)

Height/Weight: 6’3”/186 lbs.

Previous School: Troy

2024-25 Stats: 14.2 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 4.8 APG, 2.9 SPG

Offensive Impact

  • Conerway creates his offensive value as a passer and rim scorer.

    • 36.7% assist rate (20th nationally)

      • Can be considered a risk taker as a passer, hence the 20% turnover rate, but on a roster with more spacing and scoring talent, there is reason for the turnover rate to decrease.

        • The turnover rate is high, but compared to other guards across the country with a 35% or better assist rate, Conerway is in a good spot.

    • Makes some high-level reads in pick and roll. Doesn’t panic when blitzed and knows where his outlets are. Struggles a little vs drop coverage but he can draw fouls or score at the rim against size.

      • 76th percentile in efficiency as the pick and roll handler.

    • 99th percentile in rim attempts per game (5.5 attempts) and is in the 79th percentile in FG% in this area (66.5%). Elite for a guard.

      • Can be considered a bigger guard, but he isn’t the most physical or athletically gifted. Scores around the rim with a combination of patience, craft, along with above average physical traits for his position.

      • Small concerns with his scoring ability being able to translate, but the creativity in his game should bring success to the Big Ten level.

      • For what it’s worth, he did struggle to score in the 4 games Troy played against top 50 Torvik rated competition, but it is a small sample size (11-29 on 2pt FG, 37.9%).

  • Perimeter scoring is an obvious issue. 29.2% from 3pt in 2 seasons at Troy.

    • Had the green light from 3 last season, and it did not go particularly well, as he shot 37-134 (27.9%).

    • Was a little better with less volume, which will most likely be his role on this offense, but his offensive value dips significantly when he is settling for jump shots.

    • Mid range jumper is unknown at the moment, due to Troy essentially eliminating long 2pt attempts from their shot diet, so there is potential for Conerway to display an in-between game for the Hoosiers.

    • 68% career FT shooter

    • Conerway’s perimeter game would be more of an issue if he wasn’t going to be surrounded by elite shooting (was the case at Troy and he still thrived), but Indiana will have some of the best shooters in the country playing around him. Should have plenty of room to operate inside the arc.

  • His offensive game is limited in some areas, but this is a great fit for Conerway overall. His creative passing ability along with the catch and shoot ability on this roster should be a great marriage. He could average less than 10 points per game and still provide a significant impact.

Defensive Impact

  • A staggering 5.5% steal rate and 2.9 steals per game (3rd nationally in STL%).

    • This is a trait coach DeVries loves with his point guards, so consider this a great fit.

    • Will pick up his share of fouls, but he does far more good than bad with his aggressive nature.

    • Insane anticipation, and his longish wingspan allow him to gamble often without penalty.

  • Not the most fundamentally sound with his feet, but he is a ball hawk that can throw off an opposing PG’s rhythm and blow up set plays.

  • Can pick up anyone in the full court and give guards problems bringing the ball up the floor. Overall, this is a match made in heaven on the defensive end. He should be a star in his role.
