F: Cooper Schwieger (SO)

Height/Weight: 6’10”/230 lbs.

Previous School: Valparaiso

2024-25 Stats: 15.8 PPG, 7.8 RPG, 1.1 APG, 2.0 BPG, 48.9% FG

Offensive Impact

  • Schwieger can be best described as a versatile post-up oriented big man. He has the size to score consistently on smaller frontcourt players and he can give slower footed centers problems with his foot speed and off the bounce.

    • 84th percentile in post-up scoring efficiency, per Synergy. He backs down smaller defenders to the rim and scores easily at times. Struggles a bit against size but has decent touch around the rim with his post hook, left hand is solid as well. Can face up and score off the dribble.

    • Doesn’t see the floor particularly well (6.8% assist rate last season) but does a decent job of finding the open man out of post traps/doubles.

    • Schwieger’s post-up game should translate to the ACC due to his versatility in this area.

  • Another path to offense for Schwieger is through pick and roll. His mobility allows him to get behind the defense and score over the top, and he can also provide value as a pick and pop threat.

    • Shot 18-48 from 3 (37.5%) out of the pick and pop game. Not the purest of shooting forms and doesn’t have an above average release time, but his shooting ability is a real option against drop coverage defenses.

    • Struggles in all other catch and shoot situations due to his slower shot release, so there is no real value for him to provide as a weak side catch and shoot option. Has far more time vs drop coverage.

    • 85% from the free throw line last year is an encouraging sign for his perimeter shooting development. There is upside to shoot closer to 37-38% from 3 on higher volume next season.

    • Provides value as a short roll man against traps as well. His above average ball handling + mobility makes it tough on high hedging defenses to recover to him.

  • Looks to score at the rim off the bounce. Doesn’t have an intermediate game off the dribble, but this isn’t a make or break trait for him anyways.

  • Doesn’t provide much on the offensive glass. 6.4% OREB rate.

  • Schwieger’s overall efficiency isn’t great for a frontcourt player (51.5% EFG last season), but his ability to score from most areas on the floor will allow him to have a positive impact against ACC competition. He won’t necessarily be a reliable offensive hub for Wake Forest and the fact that they probably don’t have one on the roster right now is a concern, but he will hold his own as a scorer.

Defensive Impact

  • Holds his own as a post defender. Handles size at a competent level and his foot speed helps him defend face ups.

    • 1 on 1 post defense won’t be very important in a defensive scheme that traps almost every post entry.

  • Isn’t great at keeping the ball in front, but he is a great recovery defender. Makes some big time defensive plays at the rim when the defense is at a disadvantage.

    • Was switched onto smaller guards in isolation and wasn’t great at defending perimeter shots, but he alters rim attempts when guards try to get downhill.

  • Won’t be a dominant defensive rebounding, but if he is close to the 20.5% rate he had at Valpo, we can consider that a win.

  • Overall, this is a great fit for Forbes’ rim denial defensive scheme. This type of defensive scheme is often forced into rotations, so Schwieger’s mobility and recovery skills as the projected 5 man should go a long way for Wake Forest. His weak side rim protection will be key if the defense breaks down as well (6.4% block rate). The Valpo transfer isn’t necessarily a game changer on this end, but he is a solid defender who was playing on a bad defense the last 2 seasons and this fit should allow him to show off his best traits.
